This latest addition highlights Dylan's long-standing tendency to frequently change personnel within his touring group, a characteristic that stands in contrast to the unwavering structure of his concert setlists.

The recent change occurred during a performance at the PNC Pavilion in Cincinnati, where Tariq took the stage to fill a vacancy left by Julian Lage. Lage, a relatively new recruit himself, had prior engagements that necessitated his temporary absence. His initial joining had followed the departure of Doug Lancio from Dylan's touring unit, demonstrating a continuous evolution within the band's composition.

Throughout his tenure with Dylan, Lage has periodically missed engagements due to scheduling conflicts. This situation often led to fellow guitarist Joel Paterson, another recent enlistment after Bob Britt's exit in late June, shouldering the entire guitar responsibilities. Lage's most recent return to the group was for a Minnesota show on July 6, but he was again unavailable for the July 10 concert, prompting Dylan to bring in Tariq. This move made Tariq the 36th guitarist to perform with Dylan, underscoring the frequent changes in his musical accompaniment.

The question of Tariq's permanent role in the touring band remains open, especially with Dylan's upcoming European tour scheduled for October, a period when Lage has North American performances booked. Despite the ongoing alterations in his band's lineup, Dylan's concert setlist has maintained a consistent pattern over recent weeks, featuring the same fifteen songs at each show, with a rotating finale of either “I Shall Be Released” or “Every Grain of Sand.” The next performance is slated for Pittsburgh's Stage AE on Sunday night, where the composition of his guitar section will once again be a decision made closer to the event.
